Chapter 3 Study Guide of To Kill a Mockingbird - Eugean & Zinzan
In the third chapter of To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout rubs Walter face on the playground floor because he got Scout in trouble. However, Jem breaks up the fight and actually invites Walter Cunningham to their house to dinner with their father, Atticus Finch. During dinner, Atticus and Walter have a grown up conversation about what the Cunningham family have been doing in terms of farming. Walter's family was most affected by the great depression and now they are extremely poor. Walter pours syrup all over his food and Scout starts to criticize Walters eating habits. After much argument, Calpurnia drags Scout to the kitchen and scolds and slaps Scout and explains to her that everyone is different and everyone has different eating habits. Scout then finishes the rest of her dinner in the kitchen away from Walter.
The next day Miss Caroline gets frightened as a cootie crawls out of Burris Ewell's hair, him and his family are respectably poorer then the Cunningham's. Miss Caroline describes Burris as the most disgusting unhygienic person she as ever met, and wants him to go home and properly wash his hair. He then leaves the classroom insulting the teacher making her cry.
Setting: mostly takes place at the school and Scout's home
Character Profiles: Scout: smart, knows how to read and write, but poor her, since her teacher doesn't think of her abilities highly, instead rather badly. From this chapter, the readers can learn more about her honest and outgoing character and how her action comes before thought, and how sometimes she can be a bit rude: as she honestly tells Atticus how she didn't like her school and didn't want to go to school anymore, she rubs Walter's nose on the dirt, and she even criticizes Walter for his bad manners. The readers can also learn how Scout gradually start to realize the reality for once, that reality is different from what she had imagined. Ms. Caroline: similar to Chapter two, she is stil a prejudiced teacher against Scout, and stil thinks of Scout as a naughty student who has wild imaginations. Walter: He is a shy, quiet boy and in chapter two, he doesn't speak up but from chapter three, the readers can sense some changes. When Jem invites him to a supper, he was reluctant but soon decides to go. With Scout and Jem, he easily forgets that he was a Cunningham and unlike his shy character, he easily talks with Jem and Atticus. Jem: even though he is Scout's brother who likes to play with his sister at home, he is much more mature and responsible than the first grader, Scout. He knows when to stop Scout from doing wrong, and like Atticus, he is kind and fair; he even invites Walter Cunningham to a supper. He doesn't mind talking to new people and the readers can learn that Jem is an easy-going, easy-to-talk-to and a social person. Calpurnia: from chapter three, the readers once again know that she is a lady who knows when to punish a child. When Scout criticized Walter for his strange way of eating, she told her off that he was her company, that Scout shouldn't disgrace him, and that she shouldn't act so high and mighty, as if she were the best in the world.
